Alcohol withdrawal and pre-existing anxiety?
I’m a 19 year old female. I’ve suffered from anxiety for the past two years now, never been on medication because I am strongly opposed to taking it. But for the past few months I’ve been drinking at least four beers a day, at least five times a week. And I haven’t drank for almost 48 hours and I am feeling irritable and anxious. I also am late on rent, got laid off, so those factors are also causing me to be anxious. And I am somewhat of a hypochondriac.
Was I drinking too much that I’d have to go to the hospital for my alcohol withdrawal? Or is this just my anxiety intensified and not significant alcohol withdrawal?
I’d rather deal with it myself than have my family worried and miss out on work and have crazy bills to pay and I also believe that anyone can overcome anything, it’s just all in the mind. Which is why I really hope I don’t need medical treatment.

No, absolutely not. I know people who drink more than you. Honestly, I’ve drank as much as you before. Your level of consumption doesn’t rise to the level to evoke serious concern. Your psychological dependency is the kicker.
The only symptoms of alcohol withdrawal you should have is nervousness and anxiety. Not shakes, vomiting or any other physical manifestation.
If you have anxiety disorder, you should try to get xanax. Those can be habit forming as well, but you could at least break up taking those with drinking.
u need to go to an acholic rehab for withdrawal because if u don’t ur in a big risk of everything u have so go to the hospital or rehab or just um class for that stuff cause it isn’t good for u
maybe u could try some healthy alternitive if ur not already havea good diet start a good diet yogurt and muesli every morning makes a diff, when im unhappy i excersize and i feel better, u can like swap ur life style habits with new good ones healthy ones its not that hard and eatin healthy is actually cheaper then how most people eat, i dont beleive in those medications either good luck with that i hope u feel better soon! me im hyper active and anxiety i get but excersize and my sport kills it btw
You say that you are against medication, but in reality you have been self-medicating with alcohol. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and it sounds like you are using it to cope with your anxiety. There is nothing shameful about this. It happens to many people. You are young and able to recover from what may be the beginnings of alcoholism. Intervention at this point can save your life and bring you comfort. Please seek professional help to deal with your anxiety and stop drinking for now. Is there anyone in your family or a friend that yu can confide in? You can also consider going to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Call the local hotline. There is no charge and it is an anonymous program. You do not have to speak, you can attend a meeting and just listen. You owe it to yourself to get the help you need. Take care.
You need help immediately. The fact that anxiety is what is make you drink. Some times is an imbalance in your brain. Some people never drink and when they drink they automatically become an alcoholic. You don’t have to drink for 20 or 30 years to be an alcoholic. Now thanks God that you discover on time that you can not drink since you are allergic to alcohol. You are having a withdrawal of alcohol. Take some honey every time you feel like that, don’t drink any kind of alcoholic beverage. The reason you are drinking is because you are suffering from anxiety, and yes you need treatment for anxiety. I started drinking one bear a week and then two, finally I could not drink, horrible things happened every time I drink although I was not drunk. Try to seek help for your anxiety before it get worst. You need to see a good psychologyist. You can also call Alcoholic Anonymous, they would tell you what to do and your family does not have to know. I don’t think you are hypochondriac, all those symptoms that you feel seems to be real. Some people think that’s all in their mind and they keep drinking, but it’s easy if you get some help. I hope you get better.
Nope, you are just anxious. Hypochondriasis is an anxiety disorder, actually. But don’t worry, you wouldn’t meet criteria based on this.
You may have been relying on the alcohol to reduce some of your anxiety and that’s why it seems so bad now.
If you are opposed to meds, try some type of behavioral or cognitive behavioral therapy. These therapies are extremely effective for anxiety and the effects are lasting. You’ll basically learn how to deal with stress and distressing thoughts without overreacting. Therapy can be expensive, so maybe try to find a book online about cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety.
