Alcohol Detox Archives

Question by 0759890: How long will it take me to detox from alcohol?
I am trying to quit drinking and am wondering how long it will take. I am sick of the effects of alcohol and I was up to 6 or 7 12 oz beers at night only.

I never drank anything but beer. I have been drinking regularly for a year now. Thoughts? I have Xanax ready for withdrawals because I have started feeling sick already after night one. There have been certain nights I would binge. Thanks.

Alcohol detoxification is one of the many procedures that can help individuals combat his or her attachment to alcohol. Detoxification is a process that aids one’s body in removing harmful substances such as alcohol by means of natural processes and assisting body organs to perform their function in washing the body of toxins. Alcohol detox is general, depending on the condition of the affected individual. To find serious alcohol drinkers, they’re usually enrolled to alcohol detox centers where they are confined and cared for several weeks and cured with proper treatment. For moderate as well as light drinkers who believe they’ve an alcohol issue and retired serious drinkers who succeeded to overcome his or her addiction, they’re usually instructed to check with alcohol detoxification or rehabilitation clinics. Alcohol rehab in general is focused on trying to make the individual understand as well as cope with his or her troubles without resorting to drinking. The main reason why many people drink is that they cannot handle problems as well as uncertainties in everyday life. In order for them to forget their depressing problems, alcoholics typically drown themselves in liquor, seeking a temporary respite. Hence, alcohol rehabilitation treatment centers generally concentrate on this facet and value the needs of the individual.Outpatient clinic alcohol rehab on the other hand provides several different ways regarding how to aid the alcoholic, and in a case-to-case basis as well. To demonstrate, a simple month-to-month scheduled visit or consultation to a rehabilitation center can be achieved with a person who merely has minimal problems with control over consumption, or perhaps a person whose dependancy isn’t that severe. On this situation, it only necessitates therapy and assessment on the development of the patient and also advices on the patient’s problems which can make him resort to drinking.Clinic rehabilitation can also be employed for retired junkies and heavy drinkers. In fact, clinic rehabilitation is generally contrasting to a medicated alcohol detox or confinement in a detox center. When the affected individual has primarily stopped drinking and has gone through the withdrawal effects, they will then go forward to the next period which is alcohol rehab. Following a successful discharge from the detox center, clinic rehabilitation is essential to help boost the improvement or lessen almost any possible relapse of the affected person. Persistent follow-ups and reminders from the negative effects of alcohol dependency, which are very important requirements for a lasting alcohol detox, can be in the form of clinic rehab. Assistance from family members, friends and co-workers is important for a patient to achieve success.

Alcohol Detox: What to Expect

Article by Seasons Recovery Centers

Alcohol Detox: What to ExpectAs with all forms of addicition treatment, the first step in the treatment of alcoholism is detox. Alcohol detox may take place within an alcohol rehab center, where alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs are also conducted, or in a stand-alone detox facility, a facility dedicated solely to the detoxification process. Nowadays, many drug rehabilitation centers and addiction treatment facilities integrate detox in their programs, recognizing the importance of one to the other. No addiction treatment can proceed without first going through the detoxification process, and detox, on its own, is not a treatment for any addiction. In cases where a rehab center does not offer alcohol detox services, the process is done in a stand-alone detox facility recommended by the rehab center. This facility is usually within the vicinity of the rehab center and located in a safe and wholesome neighborhood. Once alcohol detox is completed, the individual shall return to the alcohol rehab center to continue treatment and recovery. Recovering alcoholics should prepare themselves for the difficulty of alcohol detox and addiction treatment – especially if they have been alcoholics for a long period of time. Withdrawal symptoms will always be present during addiction treatment, only varying in severity and duration depending on each individual. At Seasons Recovery Center, we know how difficult it is to battle alcoholism but believe that it can be cured. The recent rash of celebrity drunk driving arrests has brought international attention to the problems of alcohol abuse among the rich and famous. And it’s created a new celebrity of sorts, a high-tech booze-sniffing ankle bracelet called SCRAM – meaning Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor – most recently attached to the well-turned ankle of movie star Lindsay Lohan. The actress volunteered to wear the alcohol monitor temporarily while awaiting a court hearing after spending 45 days in successful alcohol detox program and rehab.

SCRAM cannot be removed or cheated, according to its maker, Alcohol Monitoring Systems of Denver, CO. The bracelet samples an individual’s perspiration every hour and checks for alcohol consumption, using the same technology as the famed “Breathalyzer”. While SCRAM is usually used to monitor repeat, high-risk driving-under-the-influence (DUI) offenders, the system is also proving useful in managing domestic violence offenders and as a tool in family courts, says the company. It has also been helpful in tracking recovering alcoholics in various successful alcohol detox program and rehab settings.

Federal, state and local groups and agencies are celebrating a landmark victory this week with a ruling by the California State Board of Equalization to tax so-called “alcopop” drinks as distilled spirits, rather than at the lower beer rate. The reason for the celebration is not about increased state tax revenues, but because higher prices mean fewer kids will buy the drinks. It’s all about helping to reduce the numbers of underage drinkers who could wind up needing alcohol detox later in life.

Alcopop producers have been saying all along that their drinks are “brewed malt” categorized in most states as beer. But according to the California Youth and Alcopops Coalition, up to 90 percent of the alcohol contained in the soft-drink-like beverages is derived from distilled spirits. California agreed, and state law says a beverage with any detectable amount of distilled alcohol is not a beer product. California taxes beer at 20 cents per gallon, while distilled spirits are taxed at .30 per gallon. The result will be at least a 25% increase in the price of the drinks. Similar legislation is being considered in most other states.

Alaska’s primary drug and alcohol detox center, part of the Salvation Army’s Clitheroe Center in Anchorage, has closed due to lack of public funding. The loss to the local and statewide community is tragic, considering that Alaska has the highest percentage in the USA of people needing but not receiving treatment for substance abuse and dependence problems. And when one compares the cost of keeping the center open to the costs to the state of drug and alcohol abuse – 8 million in 2003 – it seems plainly short-sighted to sacrifice a drug and alcohol detox center.

Clitheroe Center is Alaska’s largest comprehensive substance abuse treatment facility. Because of a shortage of state funding over the past 14 years, Clitheroe’s drug and alcohol detox unit has shrunk from 20 beds, to 12, to eight – and now has reached zero. The center’s drug rehab and other services, operating in the community for 30 years, will continue to be available. The closure only affects the vital drug and alcohol detox center, which treats emergency and other tough cases for which no alternatives exist.

Alcohol detox medication is given in the first stages of the detoxification process. This is the time when the alcoholic is “weaned” from dependence on alcohol. A chronic alcoholic will almost always experience withdrawal symptoms, and medical treatment can make this time bearable. There is no hope of recovery without passing through the withdrawal phase, but the symptoms can be so uncomfortable that, without medical assistance, many patients would quit and go back to drinking.

The recovering alcoholic is also closely monitored by medical personnel during this time. Each alcoholic has developed his or her own tolerance for alcohol. This can be quite high in some cases, producing severe withdrawal symptoms. Someone who wants to quit drinking may think twice when facing the possibility of strong cravings, body shakes, insomnia, or even convulsions. And that’s where anti-withdrawal, or detox medications, come in.
