Does alcohol help social anxiety?
I’m considering being an alcoholic to get over my social anxiety. I’ve tried some medicines like lustral and some herbal stuff but they didn’t help much but when i drink too much in the evenings i feel relaxed at work next morning. If you ask me i prefer to be an alcoholic rather than living with stress and pain everyday. Alcohol can shorten my lifetime but same will happen other way as well. I don’t want to grow a tumor in my brain because of being under strees 5 days in week. I need your advices.

DONT TURN TO ALCOHOL
yes… i wish it wasnt ”liquid courage” but sadly it is, and people like to drink it for this reason.
You want to.. become? an alcoholic? to get over your social anxiety? O_O
Why don’t you just go out with friends, get wasted and have fun…
No. Don’t even think about it. Have you been through the agony of a medical detox. I doubt it. Anyone who drinks alot will pay the price 5-10-20 years from now.
the best way to overcome anxiety is to expose yourself to the fear and overcome it in time.
the anxiety disappears over time.
this is what behavioral psychology teaches you.
one can argue that some anxiety is good. it keeps one on guard. most people don’t feel as comfortable around a large group of people. it’s human nature.
I have generalised anxiety disorder and get through the day as best I can but have a couple of glasses of wine of an evening to get some time off from it.But I never drink in the day I think once you start that you are on a hiding to nowhere.Meds do not work for me I use relaxation cds to help.Personally I think there is more harm done to people like us from harmful chemicals in the meds than from something like wine that people have been consuming for centuries.Read Claire Weekes Self Help For Your Nerves go to Anxietyuk.org lots of help and advice for you there.Good Luck
NOOOO. Bad idea. This will just cause you to have no just Social anxiety, but also alcohol problems, which all the problems that it brings. And probably depression and medical problems. There are successful treatments for social anxiety. It’s called cognitive-behavioral therapy with a knowledgeable therapist. Also, SSRIs such as Zoloft, Prozac, etc, if you can’t do therapy, or if therapy isn’t enough.
Go on http://www.aada.org. Visit your doctor. Call a community mental health clinic. If you have insurance look up what therapists are covered and call them up and ask them if they have experience with social anxiety. Enlist your family and/or good friends to help you get help. I know it’ll be difficult to get help for your social anxiety, but nowhere near how hard it’ll be to overcome alcoholism.
In the first term, I find that relaxation techniques, and exercise help a lot with anxiety.
I have agoraphobia and generalized anxiety disorder…UNFORTUNATELY alcohol does help….we feel uninhibited , not on Display, and ‘like everyone Else’ HOWEVER it INCREASES anxiety the next day….you know that terrible feeling of guilt, even if u didn’t do anything f*ed’ up that night. the pill that helps me is ATIVAN 2mg. tabs 4 times a day or as needed. it like xanax. I LOVE my alcohol to and prolly agree 100% w/ what ur saying, but ativan has helped so i dont feel the need to drink certain days….and if i do i really dont feel the need to excessively drink. good luck
