   debatable. In the US, the AA model is primarily used and they do perceive it as a lifelong “illness.” Most of the rest of the world does not look at it this way. Europe, for example, primarily uses the harm-reduction model and does not necessarily categorize it as an illness. In this case, the terminology/label follows the treatment.
