Treatments for a recovering alcoholic includes detoxification, alcohol detox medications, emotional and psychological counselling, healthy diet and of course, the love and support of family and friends.

Detox SymptomsThe process of detoxification causes unpleasant side effects called withdrawal symptoms. Some of the common symptoms include nausea, headaches, and anxiety while the more serious symptoms are hallucination, seizures and high blood pressure. Without alcohol detox medications to alleviate the pain, withdrawal can be very dangerous. At some cases, it has been recorded to cause death. Not all alcohol detox medications serve to relieve pain, there are also detox medication given to the person to help keep him off alcohol.

Common MedicationsThe most common medications given as treatment to withdrawal symptoms include:

* Anti-anxiety medicines are use to treat withdrawal symptoms such as delerium tremens (DTs)

* Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is used to prevent Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome that causes permanent brain damage due to excessive alcohol abuse.

* Mild sedatives may treat common withdrawal symptoms such as headache and nausea.

* Painkillers and stronger doses of sedatives are used to treat convulsions and seizures

Medications for DetoxThe following are alcohol detox medications given to help keep the reformed drinker away from alcohol:

* Acamprosate (Campral) controls a person’s craving for alcohol.

* Disulfiram (Antabuse) makes the person feel ill when consuming alcohol. It actually works by slowing down the pleasurable effect of alcohol, making the patient feel nauseated.

* Naltrxone (ReVia) works with the almost same philosophy as Disulfiram. It reduces the pleasurable effects off alcohol.

It is important to remember that a professional health provider should prescribe these medications. Self-medication can cause more harm to the person. Also, families and friends should not depend on alcohol detox medications alone in keeping the person sober. They should be vigilant in doing follow up check-ups on the person every few weeks.

Question by 0759890: How long will it take me to detox from alcohol?
I am trying to quit drinking and am wondering how long it will take. I am sick of the effects of alcohol and I was up to 6 or 7 12 oz beers at night only.

I never drank anything but beer. I have been drinking regularly for a year now. Thoughts? I have Xanax ready for withdrawals because I have started feeling sick already after night one. There have been certain nights I would binge. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Mary
First, you need to be very careful; unlike other drugs, detox from alcohol can be fatal. If you start having hallucinations or seizures, you need to call 911, or get someone to get you to a hospital. Regardless, you need to have family or friends around so they can do this for you if your symptoms get too bad.

However, if your addiction is milder, it’ll likely take 3-4 days of shakes, sweats, and nausea. Benzos like Xanax are sometimes used to control symptoms: were you prescribed these by a physician to help with withdrawal? In general, I can not stress enough how careful you need to be with alcohol withdrawal: unlike most drug withdrawal, it is very dangerous.

Article by Deanne Wong

Alcohol detoxification is one of the many procedures that can help individuals combat his or her attachment to alcohol. Detoxification is a process that aids one’s body in removing harmful substances such as alcohol by means of natural processes and assisting body organs to perform their function in washing the body of toxins. Alcohol detox is general, depending on the condition of the affected individual. To find serious alcohol drinkers, they’re usually enrolled to alcohol detox centers where they are confined and cared for several weeks and cured with proper treatment. For moderate as well as light drinkers who believe they’ve an alcohol issue and retired serious drinkers who succeeded to overcome his or her addiction, they’re usually instructed to check with alcohol detoxification or rehabilitation clinics. Alcohol rehab in general is focused on trying to make the individual understand as well as cope with his or her troubles without resorting to drinking. The main reason why many people drink is that they cannot handle problems as well as uncertainties in everyday life. In order for them to forget their depressing problems, alcoholics typically drown themselves in liquor, seeking a temporary respite. Hence, alcohol rehabilitation treatment centers generally concentrate on this facet and value the needs of the individual.Outpatient clinic alcohol rehab on the other hand provides several different ways regarding how to aid the alcoholic, and in a case-to-case basis as well. To demonstrate, a simple month-to-month scheduled visit or consultation to a rehabilitation center can be achieved with a person who merely has minimal problems with control over consumption, or perhaps a person whose dependancy isn’t that severe. On this situation, it only necessitates therapy and assessment on the development of the patient and also advices on the patient’s problems which can make him resort to drinking.Clinic rehabilitation can also be employed for retired junkies and heavy drinkers. In fact, clinic rehabilitation is generally contrasting to a medicated alcohol detox or confinement in a detox center. When the affected individual has primarily stopped drinking and has gone through the withdrawal effects, they will then go forward to the next period which is alcohol rehab. Following a successful discharge from the detox center, clinic rehabilitation is essential to help boost the improvement or lessen almost any possible relapse of the affected person. Persistent follow-ups and reminders from the negative effects of alcohol dependency, which are very important requirements for a lasting alcohol detox, can be in the form of clinic rehab. Assistance from family members, friends and co-workers is important for a patient to achieve success.

Article by Rudy Silva

An alcohol detox program is an integral component of a medication treatment to free your body from experiencing withdrawal symptoms while undergoing alcohol addiction treatment. According to the experts, those who stop drinking alcohol will have different withdrawal symptoms from 2 to 3 days after the last drink.

The medicine that is commonly prescribed to people undergoing the alcohol detoxification program is chlordiazepoxide, a benzodiazepine drug. There are 4 goals that detoxification in alcohol aims for.

First, it provides you a safe withdrawal from alcohol dependence. Second, it provides humane treatment to protect your dignity. Third, it helps provide recovery of cognitive and affective faculties. Fourth, it prepares you for continued treatment program.

In the first goal, some of the withdrawal symptoms that are commonly experienced by people who are trying to quit alcohol drinking include auditory disturbances, sweating, strong craving for alcohol, trembling, anxiety, headache, irritability, tremors and even delirium. Most often, people become irritable when they are sober for a short period of time.

The irritability, though, has its limit that when overcome, will just go away. But as to knowing the limit of having the irritability remains to be relative. Some have it for many days, even weeks that unless they succumb to their cravings, they should have another effective approach in toning down the irritability. Others are irritable for just a few hours, if they were able to overcome it immediately and divert their energy and focus to another more meaningful activity.

Having a detoxification program would certainly help you not to experience these withdrawal symptoms, or at least have them least severe.

The second goal, the program seeks to provide a treatment that upholds the dignity, reputation and rights of the patient. There may be a case when alcoholism is regarded as dreadful that instead of helping the alcoholics, the society treats them as public nuisance, depriving them of their human rights. The program ensures that the alcoholics are given the best option for treatment without condemnation.

Among the long-term side effects of chronic alcoholism, the serious and most lethal are heart disease, inflammation of the pancreas, cirrhosis, high blood pressure, and brain degeneration. While all these pose serious health problems, the brain degeneration is regarded as the most serious of them all.

The third goal of alcohol detox is to try recovering the normal function of the mental and emotional faculty of the one undergoing the alcohol treatment. At some point, the medical professionals involved in the detoxification program may try to reverse the effect of brain degeneration.

Depending on the seriousness of the case and the response of the alcoholic individual, the treatment may continue after the detox program. If such is the case, the detoxification program is also designed to help people have a safe and smooth continuation of treatment after the detoxification is completed. As to what kind of treatment it is, the medical professional is the one who should make that decision.

Alcohol detox can be considered an unpleasant but necessary aspect of getting off alcohol and fighting alcoholism. There are usually symptoms of alcohol detox but the range of symptoms are different depending on the person and on how much alcohol they usually drink. Heavy drinkers usually have more severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms than those who did not drink as much alcohol but were still regular, addicted drinkers. Some lucky people do not get symptoms of alcohol detox at all.

You can’t predict what can happen to you when you detox from alcohol so you need to plan for every possibility. You need to have someone with you and you shouldn’t go through it alone. Expect for the process to last up to 72 hours but it can be shorter than that. Any time you have been drinking regularly for years, you can expect to have some symptoms of withdrawl. Talk to your doctor before undergoing detoxification to see whether this can be done at home, whether you can have medications to take for the process and whether there are any health risks involved in alcohol detoxification in your case.

The mild to moderate psychological symptoms include having feelings of shakiness, jumpiness or nervousness, bordering on full on anxiety. You can be easily excited or have an irritability that makes you have a difficult time being around a lot of people. You can be very tired and can feel extremely depressed. The depression can be severe and last long past the alcohol detox. In such cases, you may need medical intervention. You can have difficulty in thinking clearly and can experience bad dreams.

Moderate physical symptoms you can experience include a generalized, pulsating headache, sweating of the face or palms of the hands, nausea and vomiting, insomnia, loss of appetite, pallor, clammy skin, tremor of the hands and abnormal movements of the body, as well as abnormal movements of the eyelids.

If you are unlucky enough to have severe symptoms of alcohol detox, you might have confusion or visual, auditory or tactile hallucinations–a condition called delirium tremens. You can have agitation, fever, “black outs” similar to alcoholic blackouts, and seizures or convulsions that can be repetitive and necessitates hospitalization to control the seizures.

It is important to get the proper help and support around your alcohol detox. Imagine having some of these symptoms on your own and recognize that one or more support people are necessary to make your alcohol detox as easy as possible. There are particular treatments available for those who are addicted to alcohol, even those who feel they have minor problems with alcohol consumption.

If you attend an alcohol recovery support group, ask some members to be with you when you go through alcohol detox or find out who they’ve used to help them get through the process. Remember, it doesn’t last forever and you are not alone.

All across the United States, people are looking to regain control through alcohol detox programs. It is fortunate that we live in a country where there are so many public and private agencies looking out for the welfare of society. These programs are known to be very effective when people sincerely wish to regain control through alcohol detox. There are a variety of reasons that work together in these alcohol detox programs to make them successful.

First of all, the connection between alcohol withdrawal and alcohol detox must be discussed. Withdrawal is a direct result of alcoholism, alcohol addiction and alcohol dependency. It occurs when the use of the chemical discontinues. Although the condition is unavoidable, the degree of discomfort that one may experience is manageable. Due to the actual symptoms that are associated with withdrawals, which can range from anxiety, nausea, tremors or seizures, an alcohol detox program is highly recommended for treatment. Hence, alcohol detoxification is a process by which the alcohol withdrawal symptoms are medically managed. The process allows the person suffering from alcoholism to become abstinent of alcohol. Fortunately, detox does not have to be a painful process. In fact, alcohol detox is generally administered in a monitored alcohol rehabilitation program where medications are dispensed to reduce and occasionally eliminate the systems associated with withdrawals. We all agree that intervention is an important part in the treatment of the disease. Yet, the intent of this article is to inquire and respond to the effects of this particular treatment.

When an individual has an alcohol abuse problem, they require professional alcohol treatment. It is imperative to choose the appropriate type of treatment that satisfies that individuals’ specific situation. Consulting a licensed physician is recommended because some detox programs may be taxing to undergo. Consequently, one of the most important aspects of detox is to realize that many people have additional medical issues. Although detox manages the withdrawal symptoms, it is also beneficial to cleanse the body to obtain a healthy life. The detoxification programs begin with rather strict diets to fortify the kidneys, lungs, and blood circulation. Cravings will continue when alcohol residuals remain in the body.

Also, alcohol treatment should address the varying degrees of abuse. Some individuals may have attempted to end their abuse in the past and failed. Others may have recent history of abuse and desires to correct the problem before it worsens, but encounter difficulty in accomplishing this on their own. Of course, individuals with years of alcohol abuse may have a more intricate time ending their abuse patterns. Attempting to accomplish detoxification without consulting medical assistance has proven to be very dangerous. Furthermore, an incorrect evaluation could result in the selection of a treatment modality that inevitably increases an individuals’ chance of significant failure.

It is also important that as many close friends and family members as possible be either involved or supportive of your attempt to regain control through alcohol detox. You also need them to be honest and firm with you about your progress. It helps if they love you enough to be willing to make you angry with them while helping you to stop drinking. In the end, you need to forgive them for all of the things they do to help you stop drinking because you must realize that they had to love you a lot to put your well-being over their relationships with you. Nothing can help you through alcohol detox more than knowing that people are on your side.

Alcohol Detox: What to ExpectAs with all forms of addicition treatment, the first step in the treatment of alcoholism is detox. Alcohol detox may take place within an alcohol rehab center, where alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs are also conducted, or in a stand-alone detox facility, a facility dedicated solely to the detoxification process. Nowadays, many drug rehabilitation centers and addiction treatment facilities integrate detox in their programs, recognizing the importance of one to the other. No addiction treatment can proceed without first going through the detoxification process, and detox, on its own, is not a treatment for any addiction. In cases where a rehab center does not offer alcohol detox services, the process is done in a stand-alone detox facility recommended by the rehab center. This facility is usually within the vicinity of the rehab center and located in a safe and wholesome neighborhood. Once alcohol detox is completed, the individual shall return to the alcohol rehab center to continue treatment and recovery. Recovering alcoholics should prepare themselves for the difficulty of alcohol detox and addiction treatment – especially if they have been alcoholics for a long period of time. Withdrawal symptoms will always be present during addiction treatment, only varying in severity and duration depending on each individual. At Seasons Recovery Center, we know how difficult it is to battle alcoholism but believe that it can be cured.

Article by Donna Sparks

Alcoholism is one of the many forms of addiction that could affect both adult and adolescent alike. Sudden withdrawal from alcohol causes majority of the deaths connected with withdrawal syndromes. Unlike withdrawals from other drugs, alcohol withdrawal can be deadly. The withdrawal syndrome from alcohol can include seizures, delirium tremens, and may even lead to excito-neurotoxicity, or the process of damaging and killing the nerve cells by glutamate and similar substances. Because of this, several treatments and adolescent alcohol treatment have been formed to address alcoholism.

Treatments

Most adult and adolescent alcohol treatment focus on helping people discontinue their alcohol intake. This is usually followed up with life training and/or social support in order to help the patients refrain from returning to alcohol use. Since alcoholism involves multiple factors that encourage a person to continue drinking, they must all be addressed in order to successfully prevent a relapse. Examples of this kind of treatment includedetoxification followed by a combination of supportive therapy, attendance at self-help groups, and ongoing development of coping mechanisms.

Alcohol Detoxification

Alcohol detoxification, as an adolescent alcohol treatment, is regarded as the abrupt or sudden cessation or stop of alcohol intake coupled with the substitution of alcohol with cross-tolerant drugs that have similar effects in order to prevent alcohol withdrawal. Benzodiazepines such as chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) or oxazepam (Serax) are the most commonly used drugs chosen to reduce alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Detoxification treats the physical effects of prolonged use of alcohol, but does not actually treat alcoholism. After detox is completed, relapse is likely without further treatment. These rehabilitations (or ‘rehabs’) may take place in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

Group Therapy or Psychotherapy

After detoxification, various forms of therapy such as group therapy or psychotherapy can be used to deal with underlying psychological issues that are related to alcohol addiction, as well as provide relapse prevention skills. Psychotherapy is an intentional interpersonal relationship used by trained psychotherapists to aid a client, whereas group psychotherapy or group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which one or more therapists treat a small group of clients as a cluster.

The mutual-help group-counseling approach is one of the most common ways of helping alcoholics maintain sobriety. Many organizations have been formed to provide this service. Alcoholics Anonymous was the first of these groups. Now it has more members than all other programs combined.

Article by Rod MacTaggart

The recent rash of celebrity drunk driving arrests has brought international attention to the problems of alcohol abuse among the rich and famous. And it’s created a new celebrity of sorts, a high-tech booze-sniffing ankle bracelet called SCRAM – meaning Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor – most recently attached to the well-turned ankle of movie star Lindsay Lohan. The actress volunteered to wear the alcohol monitor temporarily while awaiting a court hearing after spending 45 days in successful alcohol detox program and rehab.

SCRAM cannot be removed or cheated, according to its maker, Alcohol Monitoring Systems of Denver, CO. The bracelet samples an individual’s perspiration every hour and checks for alcohol consumption, using the same technology as the famed “Breathalyzer”. While SCRAM is usually used to monitor repeat, high-risk driving-under-the-influence (DUI) offenders, the system is also proving useful in managing domestic violence offenders and as a tool in family courts, says the company. It has also been helpful in tracking recovering alcoholics in various successful alcohol detox program and rehab settings.

Lindsay Lohan’s stay at an expensive private resort-style alcohol detox and rehab facility doesn’t change the fact that she is just one of more than 1.4 million Americans busted for DUI across the country, many of whom need alcohol detox and rehab programs. And when she buckled on her SCRAM bracelet, Ms. Lohan joined nearly 36,000 other alcohol-restricted offenders that have already been monitored by SCRAM.

Despite a recent surge in publicity surrounding celebrity DUI cases, SCRAM isn’t just for the stars. It is widely used in more than 1,000 courts in 43 states. Across the country, more than 780,000 people are sentenced to community supervision each year – people caught up in the system who have fallen victim to alcohol abuse, addiction and dependence. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, an estimated 17.6 million Americans are dependent on or abuse alcohol, and alcohol abuse costs the U.S. 5 billion each year.

SCRAM weighs less than a can of beer, and locks snugly around the lower ankle. An infrared light detects if the wearer tries to remove it or slip something between the device and their skin. It measures body temperature and perspiration, and can detect if someone imbibes as little as one drink. It captures perspiration and calibrates blood-alcohol level once an hour. It can also be set to test every half-hour. Each evening, it sends the data through a modem to the home office in Denver, where drug court or alcohol detox and rehab supervisors around the country can view the results.

The need for alcohol detox and rehab programs is growing in America. Technological advances like SCRAM are helping in many ways. But the bottom line for alcohol abuse, addiction and dependence is still successful drug and alcohol detox and rehab programs that really get down to the bottom of why the person is drinking so they can quit.

Because of the growing problem of alcoholism, particularly with teenagers, psychiatrists and doctors have come up with several treatments to address alcoholism either by use of group therapies or by medication. One common teen alcohol treatment used today is the term they call Detoxification or simply detox. Alcohol detoxification or ‘detox’ for alcoholic involves an abrupt stop of alcohol intake by substituting it with medication that has similar effects to prevent alcohol withdrawal. Benzodiazepines are the most common family of drugs used for this, followed by barbiturates.

Benzodiazepines used to prevent an alcohol withdrawal include chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) or oxazepam (Serax). Patterns are then followed in administering these drugs. These patterns are as follows:

*

The first option takes into consideration the varying degrees of tolerance. In it, a standard dose of the benzodiazepine is given every half hour until light sedation is reached. Once a baseline dose is determined, the medication is tapered over the ensuing 3–10 days. *

Another option is to give a standard dose of benzodiazepine based on history and adjust based on withdrawal phenomenon. *

A third option is to defer treatment until symptoms occur. This method should not be used in patients with prior alcohol related seizures. This has been effective in randomized controlled trials. A non-randomized, before and after, observational study found that symptom triggered therapy was advantageous.

The choice of Benzodiazepines depends on different situations such as:

*

Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) is the benzodiazepine of choice in uncomplicated alcohol withdrawal. *

Lorazepam or diazepam are available as an injection for patients who cannot safely take medications by mouth. *

Lorazepam and oxazepam may be best in patients with cirrhosis (shorter half life).

Other drugs have also been used in teen alcohol treatment. Some hospitals administer alcohol to prevent alcohol withdrawal although there are potential problems with this practice. Vitamins, such as vitamin B, is also used during withdrawal treatment to reduce its symptoms.

Another is Sodium oxybate which is used for both acute alcohol withdrawal and medium to long-term detoxification. This practice is currently used in Italy in small amounts under the trade name Alcover. Newly introduced drugs such as Baclofen are now tested to see if it’s applicable for use in a teen alcohol treatment. Recent studies on the drug has shown an increase in alcohol detoxification.

Though the use of detoxification treats the physical effects of prolonged use of alcohol, it does not actually treat alcoholism. After detox is complete, relapse is likely to happen without further treatment. These rehabilitation (or ‘rehabs’) may take place in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

Article by Rod MacTaggart

Federal, state and local groups and agencies are celebrating a landmark victory this week with a ruling by the California State Board of Equalization to tax so-called “alcopop” drinks as distilled spirits, rather than at the lower beer rate. The reason for the celebration is not about increased state tax revenues, but because higher prices mean fewer kids will buy the drinks. It’s all about helping to reduce the numbers of underage drinkers who could wind up needing alcohol detox later in life.

Alcopop producers have been saying all along that their drinks are “brewed malt” categorized in most states as beer. But according to the California Youth and Alcopops Coalition, up to 90 percent of the alcohol contained in the soft-drink-like beverages is derived from distilled spirits. California agreed, and state law says a beverage with any detectable amount of distilled alcohol is not a beer product. California taxes beer at 20 cents per gallon, while distilled spirits are taxed at .30 per gallon. The result will be at least a 25% increase in the price of the drinks. Similar legislation is being considered in most other states.

Alcopops are sweetened alcoholic beverages that are often bubbly and fruit-flavored like soda or other soft drinks, with a proven appeal to underage drinkers – especially teenage girls. We’ve seen these drinks on the shelves, and mistaken them many times for soft drinks. According to the Marin Institute, which lobbied hard for the tax increase, alcopops are sweet, flashy and with fruity flavors and names like Razzberry and Pomegranate Twist, it’s no wonder they’re popular with young teens and middle schoolers. But teenagers gleefully downing alcopops don’t realize that these fun fizzy drinks can lead them into alcohol dependence and alcohol detox.

In several European countries as well as the US, studies show that the retail price of alcoholic beverages impacts sales – especially sales to minors, who have a more limited budget than working adults. Wherever prices have been lowered, such as in Scandinavia and the UK, alcohol abuse statistics have worsened. Where prices have been raised, alcohol-related problems and subsequent alcohol detox and treatment statistics have improved. That’s the hope in California.

Meanwhile, brewers and distillers still insist their alcopop products are aimed at legal-age drinkers. Oh please! If that were actually true, then their marketing campaigns would be way off the mark – and they’re plenty smart enough to know when that happens. These marketers are letting the profit motive drive unknown numbers of young people into a bleak future of alcohol dependence, interrupted or ruined lives and alcohol detox as their only salvation.

For example, in the UK, advertising for at least two alcopops has already been banned for appealing directly to underage drinkers. Here in the US, a survey by the Center for Applied Research Solutions for the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs showed that youths are definitely attracted to the colorful, hip packaging of alcopops, that kids underestimate their alcohol content, and that these drinks are, in fact, very popular with teens. Yet another report on underage drinking by the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth found that teenage girls are now binge drinking more than boys. And finally, the American Medical Association’s “Girlie Drinks” survey released last year concluded that alcopops are the alcoholic beverage most frequently consumed by most teenage girls, and the least-favored by adult women. And recent statistics show that alcohol-dependent females are an increasing alcohol detox and rehab statistic – just look at the news, and see the girls’ names as often as the guys. That’s a recent and significant change. If nothing is done to stop the trend, it is certain that more people than ever will wind up in alcohol detox.

California’s tax increase may help reduce teenage alcohol consumption and the estimated .5 billion a year costs in medical care, work loss, pain and suffering that stem from alcohol-related violence, traffic accidents, property crime and injuries. Since similar figures can reasonably be inferred for the rest of the country, we can only hope that other states will soon follow California’s lead, and help keep our young men, and especially our women, from winding up as candidates for alcohol detox.

Article by Rod MacTaggart

Alaska’s primary drug and alcohol detox center, part of the Salvation Army’s Clitheroe Center in Anchorage, has closed due to lack of public funding. The loss to the local and statewide community is tragic, considering that Alaska has the highest percentage in the USA of people needing but not receiving treatment for substance abuse and dependence problems. And when one compares the cost of keeping the center open to the costs to the state of drug and alcohol abuse – 8 million in 2003 – it seems plainly short-sighted to sacrifice a drug and alcohol detox center.

Clitheroe Center is Alaska’s largest comprehensive substance abuse treatment facility. Because of a shortage of state funding over the past 14 years, Clitheroe’s drug and alcohol detox unit has shrunk from 20 beds, to 12, to eight – and now has reached zero. The center’s drug rehab and other services, operating in the community for 30 years, will continue to be available. The closure only affects the vital drug and alcohol detox center, which treats emergency and other tough cases for which no alternatives exist.

“We could not staff it any longer with nurses,” said Major Doug Tollerud of the Salvation Army. “The nursing shortage that has hit the nation has also hit Alaska and has also hit the Anchorage community.” Tollerud says the state was giving the Salvation Army 0,000 every year – but the detox program costs more than a million dollars to run.

Dr. Marc Pellicciaro of Providence Hospital ER says a lot more people will be walking through their emergency room doors now that the doors to Clitheroe’s detox program are closed. “We’ll have to do some of the work in the emergency room ourselves, and then the rest of the community is going to have to take care of these folks as well,” he said.

In 2004-2005, Alaska was among the top eight states for illicit drug dependence, and had the highest percentage in the nation of people aged 12 and older needing, but not receiving, treatment for illicit drug use, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

But that’s nothing compared to its alcohol problem. Alcohol has long been recognized as the state’s number one behavioral health problem. Alcohol abuse and dependence in the state is at 14%, twice the national average. Back in 2002, there were 1,109 traffic crashes in Alaska attributed to alcohol and other drugs, and the estimated costs from these crashes were more than million for legal costs, property damage, workplace costs and insurance. The cost of adult and child protective services attributed to alcohol and other drug abuse is estimated at million. These costs include foster care services, adoption care services, residential care services, and social worker services.

It’s well accepted that detox programs are a potent tool in helping return alcohol and drug abusers to a life of sobriety. With the country’s worst alcohol abuse and near-worst drug abuse problems, Alaska’s inability to find funding for the Clitheroe Center is totally at odds with the need in the state for drug and alcohol detox.

Alcohol detox medication is given in the first stages of the detoxification process. This is the time when the alcoholic is “weaned” from dependence on alcohol. A chronic alcoholic will almost always experience withdrawal symptoms, and medical treatment can make this time bearable. There is no hope of recovery without passing through the withdrawal phase, but the symptoms can be so uncomfortable that, without medical assistance, many patients would quit and go back to drinking.

The recovering alcoholic is also closely monitored by medical personnel during this time. Each alcoholic has developed his or her own tolerance for alcohol. This can be quite high in some cases, producing severe withdrawal symptoms. Someone who wants to quit drinking may think twice when facing the possibility of strong cravings, body shakes, insomnia, or even convulsions. And that’s where anti-withdrawal, or detox medications, come in.

If the alcoholic is also taking prescription medications for other conditions, like liver problems, it is absolutely imperative that the detox process be completed under close medical supervision. Interactions between the medications, along with the body’s reaction to the sudden withdrawal of alcohol, must be closely monitored.

The time required to detoxify the body from alcohol’s effects varies, but generally will be between 3 days and 7 days. There are several medications available to help the detox process along. A benzodiazepine-class drug like Klonepin will probably be considered. Benzodiazepines can help reduce the physical symptoms of withdrawal, increasing the patient’s chances of making it through this phase.

If it appears there is a chance of seizures during the withdrawal phase, the use of an anticonvulsant medication will probably be evaluated. Some of the more common ones are Buprenophex and valproate.

Medication can also help with the inability to sleep, which is commonly experienced during the detox process. An alcoholic’s body has become used to high levels of alcohol. When this is stopped suddenly, the body reacts. The detox medications can alleviate, but usually do not stop all of the symptoms, and sleeplessness at some level is not uncommon.

Along with the detox medications, the alcoholic is often prescribed a multivitamin supplement. The typical alcoholic has a poor diet. Vitamin B1 is the most common deficiency, and it’s a serious one because it can affect brain functioning.

After the detox process, other medications may be prescribed to help the alcoholic succeed at sobriety. Drugs that reduce cravings or produce a bad reaction to alcohol consumption (nausea and vomiting, for instance) can help the alcoholic work through those inevitable moments of weakness on the road to recovery.

For alcoholics who have taken the huge step of deciding they’ve had enough, detox medication is one more weapon in their arsenal. Alcohol detox medications, in conjunction with medical supervision and a determination to stop drinking, can be a second chance for someone who wants it.

Learn more about alcohol detox programs treatment. It is true that alcohol detox is hard and you cannot escape from this fact. Like any other form of detox, alcohol detox is also difficult. Following a detox diet can be challenging, and is often compared to drug detox and alcohol detox. Therefore, people prefer to undergo an alcohol detox in the comfort of their home. This helps them to feel more comfortable and to endure the process with less difficulty.

That’s what essentially detox mean. Detox is about getting rid of all the toxins from the body which got accumulated due to excessive consumption of alcohol. You can do it yourself or you can get yourself treated in a rehab center. It is recommended that you consult your doctor first before you attempt to detox your body by yourself.

The process is more involved than many think. Just stopping drinking will not change everything. There is mental work that also needs to be done, and usually a doctors help is needed. Even if you do this at home, you need to have a good support group.

The doctors and specialists at rehabilitation centers help to keep you on track, and help to make sure you don’t fall off the wagon. Besides you and what you will do, you need to partner with the program. The success of rehab program entirely depends on how well you cooperate with the treating staff. Unless you are determined and motivated you cannot defeat this habit easily. Don’t forget, you are essentially addicted.

There is always a chance for drinkers to change, once the environment they live in changes. That is why those who go through alcohol detox at the rehab center, find it extremely difficult to resist temptation once they are released from the rehab center. So if you do decide to face the challenge of an alcohol detox at home, then you are better prepared for the difficult time after your detox program is over and therefore stand a better chance of overcoming your alcoholism.

There are different levels on which one may indulge in drinking alcohol. A person who ingest alcohol can be a social drinker, which refers that there is only rare drinking. Other than that, there is heavy drinking, problem drinking, and dependence drinking.

Whereas heavy drinking is harmful, problem drinking is somewhat dangerous and in dependence drinking, alcohol becomes the utmost priority. At the level of social drinking, alcohol is not much injurious unless you are driving or are on medication or working. The main thing when it comes to reduction of alcohol intake is to accept that you have a problem and realizing to yourself that you need help.

If you are alcohol addict, then alcohol detox is the treatment that you ought to get, which is also said as detoxification. There is a short course of medication in detox treatment, which is suitable in the deterrence of the withdrawal symptoms that tend to appear when one is trying to give up drinking.

When it comes to attaining treatment for problem drinking, it is significant to take into account some aspects related to the treatment. A number of different clinics are there that ensure programs for alcohol treatment. The duration of the programs varies depending upon the intensity of your problem. When one considers attaining alcohol treatment, it is important to consider all the choices that are offered and then see which one is the most reasonable. There are different kinds of treatments that are offered at different clinics. Before actually going out there and determining a clinic, it is important to consider one’s drinking problem.

By considering the problem and its seriousness, one is able to be clear about the treatment essentials. Different clinics have their own way of functioning an alcohol detox program and each offers different kinds of conveniences and features for the patients.

When one is going through alcohol detox treatment, there are certain symptoms that are sometimes likely to appear, depending upon the state of the person. There can be uneasiness and nervousness for a few days. For some people, there may also be insomnia for a few nights and people may be likely to experience mild withdrawal symptoms.

Whenever you are considering where to get alcohol detox treatment, it is important to remember that it is not just the detox medicine that helps you desist drinking, but it is a lot more your own determination that can help you do so. So, whichever place you choose for getting the alcohol detox treatment, you ought to be sure that you are going to receive the moral support that you would need. There must also be a firm belief in yourself and you abilities.

If you have history with intense withdrawal symptoms, a physical illness, or have little support at home, then it is advised that besides receiving an alcohol detox treatment, you should go to a specialist drug and alcohol unit so that you can deal your problem in the best way possible.
