Drug and Alcohol Rehab with The Help Of Detoxification

Article by Franchis Adam

Detoxification plays a major role in drug and alcohol rehabilitation. As far as detoxification is concerned, it is based on the term ‘withdrawal’. It is a term used to denote the body’s reaction against the removal of the addicted substance. Withdrawal causes craving for the substance being removed. Detoxification is a process in which the body of any addicts tries to overcome the substance like drugs and alcohol. Actually detoxification is the first and a pertinent step in overcoming an addiction and to be successfully rehabilitated. The patient is required to be closely monitored by keeping vital signs, giving support and administering medications. When patients go through this treatment, there are numerous withdrawal symptoms or side effects which start coming up. Main side effects are: vomiting, sweating, drug cravings, nausea, shaking, headaches, diarrhea, sleeplessness, abdominal cramps, confusion, agitation, anxiety, depression and other behavioral changes. But these side effects can be overcome by using some drugs under medically monitored supervision related to Drug Detox which takes three to seven days. Like Drug Detox, Alcohol Detox is usually adopted in an inpatient medical facility. Preparation is the key to a planned and successful Alcohol Detoxification. The first job of therapy is to inspire the patient for bringing the willingness to change their drinking behavior and the second is that patients need to be given actual information about what to anticipate during detoxification. There are two types of withdrawal categories: the first is Minor which stands for early withdrawal and the second is Major which is meant for the late one. The difficulty of withdrawal depends deeply on the duration of alcohol used. Some physicians accept that the withdrawal period is related directly to the drug addiction. Worse withdrawal results in the continued use of the chemical to prevent the withdrawal. There are several key factors for a successful detoxification: Patients must admit that they have a problem and they need rehabilitation. They need to continue with the treatment and chuck out all the drugs and paraphernalia.  They must be ready to drop friends and associates that are attached to drug problem. They need to get and accept spousal support or support from friends or relatives. They have to prepare themselves for symptoms with the support of a professional. If sedative drugs are needed for a few days or longer, they must be handled carefully, as one addiction can easily be replaced by another. These are a few golden points which can instrumentally help in better detoxification.

Alaska’s primary drug and alcohol detox center, part of the Salvation Army’s Clitheroe Center in Anchorage, has closed due to lack of public funding. The loss to the local and statewide community is tragic, considering that Alaska has the highest percentage in the USA of people needing but not receiving treatment for substance abuse and dependence problems. And when one compares the cost of keeping the center open to the costs to the state of drug and alcohol abuse – 8 million in 2003 – it seems plainly short-sighted to sacrifice a drug and alcohol detox center.

Clitheroe Center is Alaska’s largest comprehensive substance abuse treatment facility. Because of a shortage of state funding over the past 14 years, Clitheroe’s drug and alcohol detox unit has shrunk from 20 beds, to 12, to eight – and now has reached zero. The center’s drug rehab and other services, operating in the community for 30 years, will continue to be available. The closure only affects the vital drug and alcohol detox center, which treats emergency and other tough cases for which no alternatives exist.
