Article by Andrew Sayers

Benzodiazepines are drugs often used as sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics, anticonvulsants, muscle relaxants, amnesic drugs used as a form of sleep-inducing drug, or as anti-anxiety drugs. There has been many forms of benzodiazepines clinically used today, but majority of these drugs are regulated by law because of their high potency to induce addiction. One of the many benzodiazepines drugs used today that has the highest potential to cause addiction is Lorazepam.

Lorazepam

Lorazepam, initially marketed under the brand names Ativan and Temesta, is a benzodiazepine drug with short to medium duration of action. It has all five intrinsic benzodiazepine effects: anxiolytic, amnesic, sedative/hypnotic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant. Lorazepam’s principal use has been in treating the symptom of anxiety. It is a unique benzodiazepine insofar as it has also found use as an adjunct antiemetic in chemotherapy. According to california drug rehab center therapists, among benzodiazepines, lorezepam has a relatively high addictive potential.

Common Medical Uses

According to professionals and california drug rehab center therapists, lorazepam has relatively potent anxiolytic effects and its best known indication is the short-term management of severe chronic anxiety. It is fast acting, and useful in treating fast onset panic anxiety. Lorazepam has strong sedative/hypnotic effects, and the duration of clinical effects from a single dose makes it an appropriate choice for the short term treatment of insomnia, particularly in the presence of severe anxiety. Its relatively potent amnesic effect, with its anxiolytic and sedative effects, makes lorazepam useful as premedication. It is given before a general anaesthetic to reduce the amount of anaesthetic agent required, or before unpleasant awake procedures, such as dentistry or endoscopies, to reduce anxiety, increase compliance and induce amnesia for the procedure.

Lorazepam’s anticonvulsant, or CNS depressant, properties are useful for the prevention and treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. In this setting it is relevant that impaired liver function is not a hazard with lorazepam since lorazepam does not require oxidation, hepatic or otherwise, for its metabolism.

Where there is need for rapid sedation of violent or agitated patients, including acute delirium, lorazepam may be used, but as it can cause paradoxical effects, it is preferably given together with haloperidol. Lorazepam is absorbed relatively slowly if given intramuscularly, a common route in restraint situations. Lorazepam is unique among benzodiazepines in having potent antiemetic properties. It is used as an adjunct antiemetic for treating the nausea and vomiting frequently associated with cancer chemotherapy, usually together with first-line antiemetics such as 5-HT3 antagonists. It is also used as adjunct therapy for cyclic vomiting syndrome.

Dependence

According to california drug rehab center therapists, the likelihood of dependence is relatively high with lorazepam compared to other benzodiazepine drugs. Lorazepam’s relatively short serum half-life, its confinement mainly to the vascular space, and its inactive metabolite results in interdose withdrawal phenomena and next dose cravings. This may reinforce psychological dependence. Because of its high potency, the smallest lorazepam tablet strength of 0.5 mg is also a significant dose reduction (in the UK, the smallest tablet strength is 1.0 mg, which further accentuates this difficulty).

Article by Rod MacTaggart

Alaska’s primary drug and alcohol detox center, part of the Salvation Army’s Clitheroe Center in Anchorage, has closed due to lack of public funding. The loss to the local and statewide community is tragic, considering that Alaska has the highest percentage in the USA of people needing but not receiving treatment for substance abuse and dependence problems. And when one compares the cost of keeping the center open to the costs to the state of drug and alcohol abuse – 8 million in 2003 – it seems plainly short-sighted to sacrifice a drug and alcohol detox center.

Clitheroe Center is Alaska’s largest comprehensive substance abuse treatment facility. Because of a shortage of state funding over the past 14 years, Clitheroe’s drug and alcohol detox unit has shrunk from 20 beds, to 12, to eight – and now has reached zero. The center’s drug rehab and other services, operating in the community for 30 years, will continue to be available. The closure only affects the vital drug and alcohol detox center, which treats emergency and other tough cases for which no alternatives exist.

“We could not staff it any longer with nurses,” said Major Doug Tollerud of the Salvation Army. “The nursing shortage that has hit the nation has also hit Alaska and has also hit the Anchorage community.” Tollerud says the state was giving the Salvation Army 0,000 every year – but the detox program costs more than a million dollars to run.

Dr. Marc Pellicciaro of Providence Hospital ER says a lot more people will be walking through their emergency room doors now that the doors to Clitheroe’s detox program are closed. “We’ll have to do some of the work in the emergency room ourselves, and then the rest of the community is going to have to take care of these folks as well,” he said.

In 2004-2005, Alaska was among the top eight states for illicit drug dependence, and had the highest percentage in the nation of people aged 12 and older needing, but not receiving, treatment for illicit drug use, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

But that’s nothing compared to its alcohol problem. Alcohol has long been recognized as the state’s number one behavioral health problem. Alcohol abuse and dependence in the state is at 14%, twice the national average. Back in 2002, there were 1,109 traffic crashes in Alaska attributed to alcohol and other drugs, and the estimated costs from these crashes were more than million for legal costs, property damage, workplace costs and insurance. The cost of adult and child protective services attributed to alcohol and other drug abuse is estimated at million. These costs include foster care services, adoption care services, residential care services, and social worker services.

It’s well accepted that detox programs are a potent tool in helping return alcohol and drug abusers to a life of sobriety. With the country’s worst alcohol abuse and near-worst drug abuse problems, Alaska’s inability to find funding for the Clitheroe Center is totally at odds with the need in the state for drug and alcohol detox.

Selecting the right drug rehabilitation center is undoubtedly one of the most difficult and challenging decisions a person has to make in his lifetime. The rehabilitation center plays an important role in the future health and well being of the patients. But different rehab centers have different drug rehabilitation services, facilities, costs and credentials. Many of us have no idea as what are the things that we are suppose to look for in a rehab center Lakeview Health Systems (www.lakeviewhealth.com) was created to provide a healing touch to people suffering form addiction, alcoholism and drug abuse. The guiding philosophy of drug rehabilitation services of Lakeview is to provide its patients with a quality environment that mimics the beauty of everyday life minus its cares and worries. The idyllic atmosphere of Lakeview has a wonderful effect on the patients and helps in quickening the pace of recovery. Treatment procedures at Lakeview are unique because of many important reasons; we encourage the buddy system and most of the staff working in Lakeview are themselves in various stages of recovery. Working closely with other critical patients induces in them a sense of responsibility and helps them empathize with their condition. The newer patients gain tremendously from the brotherly environment in Lakeview and rapid progress is noticed in their overall health condition. The drug rehabilitation services at Lakeview are different and more holistic than any other rehab centers. Our clinical programs differ in intensity and duration; with each stage addressing the core needs of the patient and helping them to manage their emotional behavior. The drug addiction treatment at Lakeview can be summarized in three important stages of dual diagnosis treatment. The first step is the detox. During detox the doctors and support staff help the patient handle the severe pressures of withdrawal. After detox the patient is exposed to a number of clinical services in which he participates with other patients. At this stage psychiatric treatments are administered to the patient to help him to overcome from psychological disorders. As we mentioned earlier our addiction treatment campus impersonates the “real life” setting. Patients reside in newly decorated, fully furnished apartments that have all the amenities found in a regular house. Staff is on call 24 hours a day and they are ever prepared to deal with all possible emergencies. So for additional information on our rehabilitation programs visit us at http://www.lakeviewhealth.com.

Drug Withdrawals, Psychiatry, Mental Health Medications Dr. Breeding discusses the withdrawal symptoms or discontinuation symptoms of mental health meds like antidepressants, antipsychotics, amphetamines, adhd drugs, and anxiety medications. He gives different resources that person can use to help them taper off the drugs. Dr. Breeding points out that many doctors overlook the withdrawal symptoms when a person discontinues taking a psychiatric drug and thus claim that the person is having a relapse of mental illness instead of the effects of coming off of a drug one is addicted to.

People who do not have the knowledge or experiences of drug or alcohol abuse, understanding the components of drug or alcohol addiction are very difficult. Drug or alcohol abuse changes the person’s human body and mind. The disease of addiction is one that is all-encompassing and very complex. As soon as dependency sets in to drugs or alcohol the cravings and drug seeking behavior develops very fast. People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol will do whatever it takes to use again or get that drink. They will spend countless hours thinking of ways to accomplish their goal to get their substance of choice. Many Christian drug rehab programs understand all the complexities that come along with drug or alcohol abuse and work together with the people in addiction to help facilitate sobriety and healing.

Today, whether or not a particular person will become addicted to drugs or alcohol no single determining factor will be the cause of their addiction. Some people can use drugs several times and alcohol for years before addiction will set in while other people who are more vulnerable can be hooked the very first time they use drugs or take that first alcoholic drink and that is why drug addiction is so unpredictable and extremely dangerous. Genetics, social environment, socioeconomic status, gender and life experiences are some of the factors experts believe influence addiction. There are many Christian drug rehab programs that have licensed staff, skilled professionals who are aware of the triggers and temptations that cause drug addiction and alcohol addiction. These drug rehab programs work with patients in addiction to effectively handle the underlying reasons for their addictions. These drug and alcohol programs break their bad behavior patterns that most addicts have been struggling with in their lives.

The environment is a place where people live which can contain many different influences that can drive them to use drugs or alcohol and develop their addictions and delve further into their addictive behaviors. For many people environmental circumstances have been responsible for their addiction of choice.

Christian rehab programs know environmental factors that trigger drug or alcohol use and have ways to break the cycle. A person needs to relearn better life and coping skills. For a person to achieve a positive outcome Christian inpatient treatment programs are a way to accomplish that goal.

A person’s life has critical development stages and environmental factors plus genetics often overlap and will have effects in their growth years. High risk locations would be in low-income housing areas that are drug addled neighborhoods with high crimes rates. Children at some point in their life who grow up in this environment are at a higher risk for developing drug and alcohol abuse problems.

That is why Christian drug rehab treatment programs are working because they see people from all walks of life, rich or poor who are dealing with drug and alcohol addiction problems. Christian drug rehab treatment programs never turn anyone away for any reason.

This disease is entirely preventable and that is the good news in the battle of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. The positive messages that drugs and alcohol are always bad and should always be avoided is possible with drug education in schools and promoting drug and alcohol prevention programs, and many people will learn and benefit from this education. To break the cycle of drug or alcohol addiction and live a drug-free life, people have to be reinforced about the deadliness and dangers of drug and alcohol addiction.

Staggering and sobering are two words that come to mind every year when statistics are published surrounding drug and/or alcohol addiction and substance abuse problems. People seeking a unique approach to drug rehabilitation the need for Christian drug rehab and recovery programs are apparent. A very important part for many people in the fight against drug and alcohol addiction is a faith based drug treatment answer which can help when other forms of treatment have failed.
Many drug and alcohol abusers leave the world of addiction behind and achieve lifelong sobriety by having the power of God in their life with strong faith and a network of supportive individuals that have proven to be a HUGE help in their lives.

Help can be found in the battle with addiction at “Freedom’s Door”, Kelowna.

“Freedom’s Door” is funded primarily by private donations. They need your support to help free men from their addictions.

Alcohol and drug addiction counselling is widely used for treating drug and alcohol addiction. Popular belief views a drug addict in an extremely negative light. The terms ‘drug addict’ and ‘alcoholic’ conjure up images of a hopeless junkie who steals to support their habit, or a middle aged alcoholic who starts drinking at six in the morning to stop their limbs from shaking.

However, now that more is known about the nature of substance abuse and other addictions, many people are diagnosed as being drug addicts who would previously never have believed they had a problem. When does drug and alcohol use become distinguishable as addiction?

Drug and alcohol abuse is the term used to describe the behavior of individuals who take drugs and drink too much alcohol. If one considers their own past, or the habits of those around them, many people fall into this category of over indulgence. Most students spend their weekends drinking too much, often consuming drugs as well. However, is this merely a phase or a sign that there is a problem?

What is addiction?
Addictive behaviours are based on an obsessive and compulsive need to consume mind altering substances. The using may have begun as a ‘bit of fun’ or experimentation, but the problem becomes clear when the person in question carries on using these substances when their peers have stopped. The difference between these individuals is something known as the disease of addiction. An individual with the disease of addiction will require alcohol addiction and drug addiction counselling to help arrest the problem.

The disease of addiction
The disease of addiction is not a proven fact, but nevertheless it is widely considered as an explanation for the reason people become drug addicts and alcoholics. Many believe that addicts are born addicts and are thus born with the disease. Many addicts and alcoholics describe feeling like an outsider from a very young age, as well as other feelings of unease and hatred of reality.

The disease of addiction is defined as being an allergic reaction to any type of mind or mood altering substance. This reaction causes the individual in question to lose all control over their drinking and using. From the first sip or hit, a person with the disease becomes “powerless”.

It is common knowledge that it is the first drink or drug that the alcoholic or addict consumes that leads them to their downfall – once they have the first taste, even after being abstinent for a time, they cannot control their using. There is a common saying to which recovering addicts and alcoholics refer – “one is too many and a thousand is never enough” which summarises perfectly this lack of control and constant need for more, no matter what the cost of these actions is.

Abuse or addiction?
The disease concept creates a noticeable distinction between abuse and addiction. Many professional counsellors and therapists will not diagnose a client as being an addict until they are over 20 years old as many teenagers experiment with drugs and alcohol. Puberty accompanied by peer pressure, finding one’s place in society and experiencing intense situations and feelings for the first time make adolescents ripe candidates for drug and alcohol abuse.

There are situations where parents find their teenager using drugs and send them to rehab immediately for alcohol addiction and drug addiction counselling when the adolescent does not have the disease of addiction – they are experimenting. Sending a person to rehab who is not an addict but merely an abuser can be extremely harmful.

Even habitual use of drugs does not necessarily mean that the person in question has a problem. Often when extreme emotions such as grief, stress or jubilation are experienced, many people turn to drugs and alcohol to numb painful emotions or celebrate good emotions. Those with the disease of addiction will begin their addiction as everyone else does – experimentation and having fun with friends. As the disease of addiction is a progressive and incurable illness, the drug use may not be particularly worrisome at first. However, as the disease progresses, so will the use of drugs and alcohol.

The disease is all encompassing; other compulsive behaviours such as sex addiction, eating disorders, gambling addiction, cutting and co-dependence are frequently acted out by the sufferer. The disease pushes the addict to escape their feelings and surroundings, and they will find themselves swapping different forms of addictive behaviours, interspersed with their drug and alcohol abuse.

It must be made clear that an addict is not a ‘bad’ person or someone with a moral failing – they have an illness, however this illness is their responsibility to manage.

A Twelve Step Programme
A Twelve Step Programme is a successful way of arresting the disease of addiction. The Twelve Steps can be seen as the ‘medicine’, helping an addict stay clean one day at a time through providing a support system and tools for coping with life in a normal state, instead of the altered states which addiction prefers.

Abuse and addiction are two very different types of behaviour. Abuse defines drug and alcohol use on a social level and even though addiction often begins as such, the disease takes hold of the addict and progresses them to a level where they cannot stop using drugs and alcohol, even if they want to and stand to lose everything. An abuser will not engage in this type of behavior and when faced with great personal loss will be able to stop unlike an addict who will progress to a stage where alcohol addiction and drug addiction counselling is needed.
