If you’re trying to quit smoking, chances are you’re finding it pretty tough. Most people have to try to quit smoking several times before they find success, and even then approximately thirty percent of people will relapse and start smoking again within a few months.

Some people try to quit smoking by will-power alone, and this is the hardest method (although it is also the most rewarding if you can succeed) but many people choose to quit by weaning-off the drug using nicotine replacement therapy – patches or gum. Quit drinking on my own… what now?

I quit drinking alcohol a week ago. Last week I detoxed the shit out but I still feeling sluggish, depressed and I suffer from daily headaches. I have lots of alcoholic friends so I know all about withdrawal symptoms and risks. I got past the detox stage and now am staying clean. BUT, my old drinky-buddies are not with me now which is good cuz they still drink. I need help.

Is there a vitamin or something to help me with cravings and these ill feelings? I refuse medication and I refuse to go to meetings unless it’s online. Any resources would be of great assistance. Thanks in advance.

If your current level of drinking has started to make you feel ashamed then it’s time to get off that bar stool and face your problem face-to-face. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be an alcoholic, there are many physical and psychological benefits to quitting drinking. If you’re ready to kick the habit, here is a list of some basic steps to follow.

Visit your physician. If you’ve been drinking for quite some time, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as panic attacks, server anxiety or delirium tremens. Speaking with a medical professional about your situation will give you a clearer idea of what to expect and it will also be uplifting encouragement to continue. Be optimistic about the prospect of quitting. Don’t view the absence of alcohol in your life as a door shutting. Instead think about all you can gain from quitting the bottle. Think about all of the people that it’s cut from your life and think about how great it will be take care of yourself and rekindle old friendships and to rebuild burnt bridges. Choose a specific date to quit. If you can, make it a significant date, something that will remind you of why you are quitting. Perhaps the date when you got divorced from your spouse or your birthday. Throw out all of your alcohol and alcohol related materials. Everything from the wine bottle opener to that six pack of beer should end up in a dumpster, far away from your home. Read the rest of this entry
