ugh, so I’ve been drinking about 4 beers a night on average for quite some time now – like 3 years, and am trying to quit so I can avoid liver problems and lose the belly I’ve got. I’m 25. I have a pill from when I was going to get my wisdom teeth taken out. Should I take it all or save half for later? It’s five milligrams. I’ve read a lot on the internet about alcohol withdrawal. I honestly wasn’t expecting them and I hate anxiety. It’s enough to make me go do a shot of vodka, but I found this pill. Also, I don’t have a regular doctor so I’m not sure I can go to a walk in clinic and say “hey I’m trying to quit drinking, got a zanax for me?” I just don’t see that working out to well. Any other ideas before i start looking on the street corners? Just kidding. Not going to do that.
the dentist gave it to me because I expressed that I was going to have massive anxiety when I went to get my wisdom teeth pulled. Apparently it’s common practice to hand out valiums for patients who are coming back for that. I took a fourth. my mom is a nurse and said five milligrams would have me sleeping on the living room floor probably. I think I DO need medication for anxiety, that’s the primary reason I started drinking, then I just kept drinking because I liked it. :/ But boy it’s tough to quit!

A 79 year-old friend of mine recently fell and broke her hip.
She had three times the legal blood-alcohol limit at the time
and was known to drink regularly.
After surgery to fix the broken hip, she went into DTs. The
physical shakes and tremors lasted about three days and
she was treated with Adivan and Trazadone. She was moved
to the physical therapy unit.
The problem is she can seem very clear-headed but every
now and then she thinks she’s at home instead of at the
hospital. Or she might say that someone was looking in the
window last night or making a lot of noise in the backyard.
The nurses say it could be the drugs and pain medicine that
are making her confused. Adivan was stopped two days ago
but she still gets Trazedone at night and possibly Percocet
as needed for pain.
Before all this you could tell if she had been drinking but she
never was confused about where she was or thought someone
was at the window, etc.
It has been 2 weeks since surgery.

The world has been abusing alcohol since many centuries, it may be one substance commonly used and abused by our ancestors and us. When we discuss alcoholism facts it must begin with the reason that makes this substance so popular. When alcohol reaches the brain it secretes some chemicals called dopamine and serotonin which induce a state of euphoria and well being. This is the state which makes an addict drink alcohol again and again to get that feeling of euphoria.

Basically that’s my question. I’ve decided that I want to be completely sober for a month, but I’m wondering how long does it take for me to feel normal again? As in normal I mean that right now my head (brain) has a slight fuzziness to it, and I’m going through bouts of agitation, irritation, and general anxiety. So how long before that all wares off? I’m sure it’s different for everybody but what’s the usual estimate?
