Alcohol acts as a depressant on all the major neurotransmitters in the brain. In order to compensate for this the brain does actually boost the levels of neurotransmitters for a period. Unfortunately after the alcohol has worn off your brain is then over compensating and so you're flooded with too much dopamine and norepinepherine (specifically).

These two combined can cause anxiety and the fact you're on cymbalta which is a Selective Serotonin and Norepinepherine Re-Uptake Inhibitor (SSNRI) then you're prolonging this overcompensation and making the anxiety worse.

There's a couple pf possible solutions:
1. Stop drinking.
2. Stop taking Cymbalta.
3. Try something called the Linden Method to help your anxiety: http://dwarfurl.com/e761e

Yikes! That's too bad - but yes, stop drinking, of course.

What this is probably doing is the old saw about alcohol helps you to relax... well, I'd have to bet it's also opening up the door to your unconscious. Pot will do the same thing for some people. Any sort of altered state is hard on people who have things repressed in their unconscious.

So you have various abuses which you have 'forgotten' - they've been repressed - you don't remember them - you don't want to remember them. But when they threaten to climb back into consciousness, that causes a panic sense - sense of impending doom - anxiety!

It isn't much fun. Some people get this - it's called 'anxiety neurosis' - and lots of people think it's just some stray physiological reaction, but it isn't. There's memories pressing to come back into consciousness. You can deny this for a long time - maybe forever.
